Navigating the Challenges of MIS Migration: Reflections on Technology and Human Behaviour

When I took on the role of Director of IT at my current school, I was faced with a multitude of projects, one of which was an MIS (Management Information System) migration which the school had been using for 12 years. Regardless of the specific MIS system we were using or the one we migrated to, the importance of this project cannot be underestimated. I would like to share my thoughts on this process, divided into several key articles. The first being about technology and humans.

Technology as a Crucial Component: To me, technology is not merely a tool; it is an invaluable member of our school’s workforce. Consider it as another member of staff. The MIS system, in particular, plays a critical role in the smooth functioning of any educational institution.

No Magical Solution:

Whether you decide to stick with your current MIS solution or opt for a migration to a new one, challenges are inevitable. It is crucial to acknowledge that there is no perfect fix. However, by actively addressing issues as they arise, we can strive for continuous improvement.

Similarities between Technology and Human Relationships:

When something isn’t functioning optimally, it is essential to dig deeper and understand the root cause rather than simply searching for problems to justify making a change. Just as we value open communication and problem-solving in human relationships, the same approach can be applied to our relationship with technology. I encourage you to engage with the team responsible for the MIS system, share your feedback, and discuss any challenges you encounter on a daily basis.

Assessing Investment of Time, Effort, and Resources:

It is important to evaluate whether it is more beneficial to invest in enhancing our existing relationship with the current MIS system or exploring a new one. In my experience, most relationships, including those with technology, can be repaired if both parties are committed to making it work.

By adopting a proactive mindset, fostering open communication, and investing in the necessary resources, we can navigate the challenges of technology use and human interaction. This will lead to a more efficient and effective utilisation of technology, ultimately benefiting everyone.
