The Hour of Code

Computer Science Education Week this year has set itself a high target this between 9th – 15th December 2013. The aim is to introduce 10 million students to “code”, an introduction to programming through an ‘hour of code’. Code.org is funding this important week and has the backing of many well known celebrities and IT Geeks. Everyone from 6 to 96 is encouraged to participate from anywhere in the world who has an hour to spare, access to a computer and the Internet. It’s actually not much to ask for something that would give you a brief insight into how things work behind all the applications that we use.

Bill Gates argues that “Learning to write programs stretches your mind, and helps you think better, creates a way of thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains.“ and the late Steve Jobs would want “Everybody in this country…learn how to program a computer…because it teaches you how to think.”

To get started go to code.org for inspiration, then head of to csedweek.org and choose whether you wish to promote or teach the #HourOfCode. There are very easy steps to follow to either promote or teach during the Computer Science Education Week.

Our school will certainly add to the list of 10 million that will be learning to code between 9th to 15th December 2013.
